Using GenPod Animal

Archiving DNA on GenPod

A simple drop of blood is all it takes. Talk with your veterinarian about putting the samples on GenPod next time they're caring for your animal. Just follow the instructions included in your GenPod kit. Each well contains a specially formulated and patented material that will safely encapsulate the DNA and preserve it forever. The GenPod will keep it sealed tight and available if and when you need it.

Storing data on GenPod

Storing data on GenPod Animal is as simple as plugging it into your USB port on your computer. Once you've done that, you can save any file on GenPod.

Store all relevant information

Any file that saves on your computer will save on GenPod Animal. People are keeping records of their animals that are important - like:

  • Important papers
  • Awards and accomplishments
  • Blood line information
  • Registration and licensing papers
  • Pictures and memories
  • More...

Store genetic sequencing information

Parentage Information -  In high cost breeding programs, parentage control is highly recommended. Mistakes can and do occur, having this data is essential. Discuss with your veterinarian or breeder how they can assist in getting the data and/or reports collected for you to store on GenPod.

Favorable Traits - Information/reports indicating alleles with a favorable effect in marker-assisted selection

Unfavorable Traits - Information/reports indicating alleles with an unfavorable effect

SNP’s (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) data - for genomic selection criteria

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) (also known as full genome sequencing, complete genome sequencing, or entire genome sequencing) is a laboratory process that determines the complete DNA sequence of the animal's genome at a single time. This entails sequencing all of the animal’s chromosomal DNA as well as DNA contained in the mitochondria. This data is most often used in research settings, but is becoming more common in genetic marker assisted selection as it opens the possibility of selecting directly for favorable alleles (desired traits).

NOTE: The 512GB GenPod Animal is required for SNP's and WGS data storage.

The above list is not comprehensive but is intended to give you a better understanding of what information may be of value. Your veterinarian or breeder can assist you in storing your animal’s physical DNA on GenPod and will also be able to guide you in deciding what genetic data/information may be important to store on the GenPod. Additional fees will apply to have these various reports and data collected. Consult with your animal care professional to understand what these additional fees will be and to understand the processes involved in collecting the various reports and data.
